HSHansen wins façade contract for two new circular buildings in Postbyen, Copenhagen
HSHansen will deliver the façades for two new circular buildings in the third and final phase of Postbyen in Copenhagen. This marks HSHansen’s return to the area, where the company also delivered the façades for Postbyen’s existing towers.
The contract is being carried out for main contractor 5E-Byg and includes a 15-storey residential tower and an office building of approximately 6,500 m². The two buildings continue the distinctive architectural expression that has become a defining feature of Postbyen.
HSHansen returns to Postbyen
HSHansen previously designed, manufactured, delivered and installed the façades for the existing towers in Postbyen.
The new contract builds on the company’s experience from the previous project and its expertise in complex high-rise façades.
“There is naturally something special about returning to Postbyen and having the opportunity to contribute to the final phase. The existing towers were both an exciting and demanding façade project, and we are proud that our experience and expertise will once again be brought into play,” says Carsten Sørensen, Sales Director at HSHansen.
Residential and office space
The residential tower will comprise almost 200 youth housing units from the 1st to the 13th floor. The ground floor will feature communal areas including dining spaces, lounges and social areas.
Four penthouse apartments will be established on the 14th and 15th floors in staggered levels, with access to a private roof garden and panoramic views across Copenhagen.
The second building will be a circular office building of approximately 6,500 m², which can, among other uses, be designed as the headquarters of a single company.
A complex façade project
The circular geometry of the buildings places particular demands on design, production and installation.
The façade elements must be precisely adapted to the shape of the buildings while also meeting the different functional requirements associated with residential and office environments.
The location close to Copenhagen Central Station and the surrounding railway tracks also places high demands on planning, logistics and coordination.
“The façades must both support the architectural vision and meet the project’s requirements for quality, functionality and documentation. This is exactly the type of complex façade contract that our organisation and production set-up are designed to handle,” says Carsten Sørensen.
HSHansen is responsible for the façade contract from design and production through to delivery and installation.
HSHansen’s scope comprises approximately 7,000 m² of façade distributed across around 800 prefabricated HansenUnitAl elements incorporating, among other things, glass, sheet cladding, fibre-reinforced concrete and balustrades, as well as stick façades at ground-floor level.
On the tallest building, the façade is designed with staggered joints between the storeys. Combined with the segmented, circular geometry, this makes the design particularly complex.
The final phase of Postbyen
Postbyen phase 3 comprises approximately 26,000 m² of residential, office, retail and café space.
In addition to the two buildings for which HSHansen is delivering the façades, the phase includes social housing, an additional office building, and new green urban spaces and connections.
The project is being developed by P/S Downtown, a joint venture between Danica Ejendomme and DSB Ejendomsudvikling. 5E-Byg is the main contractor, AART is the architect and lead consultant, and Artelia is the consulting engineer.
