HSHansen awarded façade contract for "The Station Banebyen" in Odense, Denmark

HSHansen has been awarded the façade contract for The Station Banebyen in Odense, a major mixed-use development comprising both hotel facilities and commercial office spaces.

Visualisations by C.F. Møller Architects

HSHansen is proud to have been appointed for the façade package on The Station Banebyen and looks forward to working alongside A. Enggaard A/S, who is acting as main contractor on the project, while the client, P/S PKAE Ejendom, forms part of the same organisation.

Designed by C.F. Møller Architects, The Station Banebyen will become a key part of the ongoing transformation of Banebyen in Odense into a vibrant new urban district combining offices, hospitality and public transport connections close to both the railway station and light rail network.

With a combination of hotel operations and commercial tenancy, the building places high demands on the façade in terms of energy performance, acoustics, robustness and long-term operation. At the same time, the ground floor façade must support an active connection to the surrounding public realm, while the upper floors balance daylight, views and solar shading.

The Station is therefore a distinctive building that requires a façade solution capable of delivering far more than aesthetics alone, making the project a strong match for HSHansen’s expertise.

Two façade systems
- one integrated solution

The project combines prefabricated unitised façade systems with traditional stick façades, allowing a significant proportion of site work to be transferred into controlled factory production conditions. This approach improves quality control, tolerances and logistics, which is particularly important on constrained urban sites such as Banebyen in Odense, where coordination and available space are limited.

The commercial building will feature a 10-storey unitised façade using prefabricated HansenUnitAl modules. The solution ensures consistent quality, efficient installation and improved logistical control throughout the construction process.

At ground floor level, stick façades with large glazed sections will create openness and strengthen the building’s connection to the surrounding streetscape. Flexibility is essential here, both in detailing and in the interface with entrances and varying ground conditions.

The upper levels are likewise completed with stick façades, glass balustrades and bespoke steel trellis structures clad in aluminium, contributing to a light and elegant architectural expression.

The main entrances will incorporate fully automatic three-wing revolving doors, providing an efficient and refined access solution.

Consistency in materials and façade expression

The entire façade is unified through the use of anodised aluminium in a warm bronze finish, creating a calm and coherent architectural appearance across the different building functions.

The combination of unitised façades and stick systems supports both buildability and the desired differentiation between building elements. The prefabricated modules contribute to faster enclosure of the building and improved construction efficiency, while the stick façades allow for precise adaptation around complex details and transitions.

A strong process with demanding requirements

According to HSHansen Sales Director Per Madsen, the combination of systems is a key strength of the project:

“The combination of unitised elements and stick façades allows us to optimise both production and installation. We can achieve a high level of precision in the repetitive façade areas while maintaining flexibility where the façade geometry becomes more complex,” says Per Madsen, Sales Director at HSHansen a/s, Denmark.

He also highlights the importance of the close organisational relationship between client and main contractor:

“It creates short decision-making processes and a close integration between budget, programme and technical development. That places demands on the project team, but it also creates a project with strong alignment throughout the process. In addition, it has enabled us to become involved at an early stage and contribute with technical input and façade design development from the outset, which is where we create the greatest value.”
